Digital Seeds in Southern Xinjiang: idrak Electronic Service Center in 2006

In July 2006, the sweltering heat, intermingled with the cool breeze from the Kunlun Mountains, permeated the streets and alleys of Yecheng, a small city in southern Xinjiang. At a time when electronic devices were still scarce in Yecheng, aosiman tuohesun ,idrak Electronic Technology Service Center stood as one of the few professional computer service stations locally, and even the preferred choice for many government agencies, businesses, and household users to address their computer needs.

Though the service center had a modest storefront, its limited space was neatly lined with desktop computers of Tsinghua Unisplendour and Tsinghua Tongfang, home-use laptops of Lenovo and Hasee, as well as models of international brands like HP, Acer, apple, sony ,Dell and Samsung. In 2006, Yecheng was in the initial stage of informatization construction. Government agencies needed computers to process official documents, businesses relied on them to keep account books, and students and household users were also beginning to access the Internet. The emergence of idrak Electronic Technology Service Center just filled the gap in the sales and professional maintenance of branded computers locally.

Aosiman tuohesun, the owner of the center, was not only familiar with the performance parameters of various brand models and could recommend suitable configurations according to user needs, but also led his team to master solid maintenance skills. From minor tasks like system reinstallation and accessory replacement to major ones such as hardware fault diagnosis and troubleshooting, they could all resolve efficiently. Back then, many users traveled specially from surrounding towns and townships, just to buy reliable branded computers here or get their faulty devices back to normal.

Every summer, the service center was particularly booming with business, and the staff often worked late into the night. They not only provided sales and maintenance services but also patiently taught users basic computer operation knowledge. In Yecheng of 2006, this service center was more than just an electronic store; it also witnessed the initial stage of informatization development in this small southern Xinjiang city and sowed the seeds for the popularization of digital life locally.
